NCMA’s newest exhibition portrays the magnetism we feel for bodies of water alongside the dangers, even the terror, that seas often present. This exhibition examines the romantic fascination artists have always had for expanses of water through American and European artists working in many styles from the mid-19th century to the present. Organized by Director Emerita Constance Schwartz, The Sea Around Us includes works by Jasper F. Cropsey, William Glackens, Thomas Buttersworth, Childe Hassam, Red Grooms, Maurice Prendergast, Edward Hopper, Louis Comfort Tiffany and N.C. and James Wyeth and other masters of seascape art.

MORT KÜNSTLER
Sponsored by Mill-Max Mfg. Corp.
Sponsored in part by Astoria Federal Savings
“For Us the Living” portrays the sights, feelings and drama of the Civil War. Considered by many to be the leading contemporary painter of Civil War scenes, Mort Künstler’s work is esteemed for its dramatic intensity and for an extraordinary level of authenticity that results from intensive research. The exhibition consists of approximately 50 paintings and a selection of documentary objects including a first-time-ever look into Künstler’s creative process through sketches, drawings, preliminary studies, photographs and props. Many of the paintings are from Künstler’s own collection, others are from various private and public collections.

Tom Sanford paints vibrant representations of pop objects and celebrities. The exhibition is organized by Elaine Berger for the museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle.

2D/3D: Paintings by Keith Mayerson, Sculpture by Kent Henrickson
This two-person exhibition features painter Keith Mayerson and sculptor Kent Henrickson.
Mayerson’s paintings have been described as pop culture narratives, as well as contemporary icons. Calling his work sensual and earnest, The New York Sun wrote, “Mr. Mayerson manages to create surprise and beautiful translations into oil paint.” His work has been seen in solo and group shows throughout the country and has been reviewed in distinguished periodicals.
Kent Henrickson’s glazed porcelains, some featuring text, have been exhibited internationally. He said that he strives to, “create a broader dialogue by focusing on the interplay between both high and low culture. I’m interested in constructing a discourse or new history by taking bits and pieces to create an enduring narrative or non-history.” He was the subject of a 2007 biography by art critic and freelance curator Bob Nickas.
The exhibition is organized by Elaine Berger for the museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle.

Museum Launches Grass Roots Campaign for New Art Space for Children

Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor has embarked on a major campaign to create a new Art Space for Children. The museum invites all of Long Island to join in this exciting venture.

The existing building on the museum campus will be expanded and transformed to become an entirely new facility designed by the internationally-renowned New York firm, Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership.  Filled with natural light, vibrant color and interactive technologies, the future Art Space for Children will be a unique showcase inspiring children’s creativity both through viewing and making art.  Planned for children ages 3 to 12, the new Art Space for Children will offer young people space for contemplative reflection, adventurous imagining, and visual thinking.

On October 2, Board Member L. Ronald S. Gray, the chairman of the Art Space for Children committee, will bicycle from Greenport to Roslyn Harbor to raise funds and build awareness across Long Island of this initiative for children and families. His tour, called Cycling for Kids & Art, finishes at 3:30 p.m. at the future Art Space where children and their families will welcome Ron’s arrival and also celebrate the opening ofBeastly Feasts! A Mischievous Menagerie in Rhyme, a new exhibition based on the illustrated children’s book by Robert Forbes

Said Ron Gray: “As a newly appointed board member and chairman of the Art Space for Children committee, I felt compelled to do something different – something that would make a statement and raise awareness about the Nassau County Museum of Art, this jewel in Roslyn Harbor. With this in mind, I thought how great it would be to cycle from the end of Long Island to the museum to raise awareness about our plans to build the Art Space for Children.  My goal is to raise $50,000 towards the grass roots campaign for the new building.  Join me along the route or welcome me at the finish line – at the future Art Space for Children at 3:30 p.m.  Please help me reach my goal by generously donating to Cycling for Kids & Art.Your support will help create an exciting, child-friendly environment where all families can explore together the fascinating world of art.”

Sponsors for Cycling for Kids & Art already include BNY Mellon/Joseph T. Canevari, Center for Wealth Preservation/Shane Parouse, LoveInPeace.com/Cliff Dragonetti, Mayer & Company, LLP/Robert Mayer, Merrill Lynch/Jeanne Hanrahan, Ohrenstein & Brown/Michael Brown and Pure Green LLC/Brigitte & David Stetson (list in formation, complete as of August 2010).
